Just because a new year is almost here doesn’t mean your wanderlust diminishes; for some, it just gets stronger and stronger. Forget about South Africa’s Garden Route, Australia’s Great Ocean Road and America’s Route 66 because below are some lesser-known and off-the-beaten-track road trips that you’ll love.

West Coast of South Africa

South Africa’s Weskus is one of the country's lesser-known gems. In less than an hour after leaving Cape Town, it’ll feel like you are in a coastal desert as you turn into the West Coast National Park. Have a cooling dip at Kraal Bay before visiting the towns of Paternoster, Velddrif and St Helena Bay. Try some wild camping along the coast of the Namaqua National Park. Summer is the best time of year to drive the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road. While the route is only 50 miles long and takes about two hours of non-stop driving, be prepared to be blown away by magical Montana’s Glacier National Park. Take lots of detours or stop to go hiking, biking or swimming. Look out for bighorn sheep and mountain goats near Logan’s Pass, while grizzly bears have been spotted near two Dogs Flats. There are no service stations between Lake McDonald and the Rising Sun Motor Inn, so ensure your Wolf Pack Pro storage boxes and Dometic fridge are packed with enough snacks, drinks and food. Expect the unexpected, like snow towards the end of summer or closed sections of the road during the winter.

Bilbao to Bordeaux Europe

If you like beach activities in the sun and great food, then this is the route for you. Start in Bilbao, but don’t leave before taking a surf at one of the world-class beaches, then drive along the Atlantic to San Sebastian, which is where you’ll want to fill your Dometic fridge with some local produce such as spider crab, sea bream, hake, and clam. Find a quiet spot in the Pyrenees to pull up, get out the CADAC gas cooker and Front Runner’s Expander Chair and enjoy the BBQ and views. After some more water sports in Biarritz, it’s time to push on to Bordeaux, where some of the finest wines in the world await.

Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way

Ireland has no greater road trip than this 1600-mile coastal trek between Derry in the north and Cork in the south. Wild camp in your Front Runner Roof Tent on one of the many secluded beaches along the stunning route while cooking local beef or seafood on your BBQ/Fire Pit. Enjoy many highlights, including the Cliffs of Moher and the Ring of Kerry. Silo Art Trails of Australia

How do you inspire people to visit towns in Australia that tourists or visitors typically bypass, as there’s no real reason to go there? You get famous artists to paint the most incredible murals on the town's silos. This has led to the establishment of the Australian Silo Art Trails with locations throughout this vast country.

If you live in Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth or Brisbane, you could visit some examples of Silo art near you over the course of a weekend or couple of days. Once you’ve worked out your route, you could decide on other activities you’d like to do in the area so you can load your surfboard, bicycle, or canoe onto your roof rack.
