Beyond the gear with Craig Kolesky

Namibia holds a special place in Craig Kolesky’s heart. The Cape Town-based adventure sports photographer has been travelling north of the South African border since 2005 and has lost count of his Namibian passport stamps.

“You never know what you’re going to get up there,” he says, explaining how the scenery is so varied and dramatic. “Every time you drive around a corner there is always something unexpected - you can have driven the same road countless times and still be met with a new scene every time you go back.”

As a photographer, Craig is highly in tune with how the light at various times of the day can change a scene. “The morning and evening light in the Namib is something truly special,” he says. “It's something I've not experienced in any other country."

Craig has been documenting adventure sport for over two decades and morphed into overlanding almost by default. Now his travels to Namibia (and elsewhere) have taken on an entirely new tone. And, as you’ll see in this episode of Find Anywhere, traveling for himself (not exclusively for work) and sharing those moments and special places with family and close friends has become very important to him. “Using my vehicle as an office (and home base) over the years I got to a point where I wanted to kit it out to be the most comfortable and convenient setup. With that came overlanding and it’s been amazing to share that passion with my family.”

For the Find Anywhere shoot deep into Namibia, Craig made use of the Slimsport Rack system, as well as our Roof Top Tent. “That trip was just on 10 days and we were pretty much self-sufficient, we all had dual battery systems, Dometic Fridges and Wolf Pack Pros. Those have been a game-changer, I’m kind of a packing and sorting nerd, and with those, all the gear and gadgets have their specific place so you can find anything within 30 seconds. I do believe, on trips such as the Find Anywhere mission, to have a system in place so you know where everything is.”
