TOP TIPS FOR OVERLANDING WITH KIDS
Overlanding solo or with a partner focuses on just yourself or another adult, however, including one or more kids in the experience turns overlanding into a completely different adventure. You’ll need to pack extra specialized gear and supplies to keep the kids happy and entertained. Therefore, it’s essential to consider their needs when planning your overland adventure. Traveling with kids can be rewarding and a lot of fun, so here are some tips to help achieve that.

1. Part of the prep
Overlanding trips should be planned well in advance. It is important for the kids to be part of the process of choosing where to go for the family’s summer or winter vacation.
Once you decide, show them an exciting documentary about your destination to ignite their enthusiasm. Gather some materials about your destination or route. Create a list of kid-friendly activities and let them choose their favorites. Incorporate some of these into the trip planner. Those will go a long way to making it the trip you want and need.

2. Keep them safe
Your kids are the most precious things in your car, so you should do everything you can to keep them safe. This includes checking their seat belts for wear and tear and ensuring they have the appropriate child seats if needed.
Adventurers Karo and Phil recently traveled with their young daughter, Lettie, to the national parks in Botswana. Since the campsites are unfenced, they made it clear to Lettie that wild animals, such as elephants and hyenas, might wander through the camp, so she wasn’t allowed to leave the vehicle area by herself. They needed to find different ways to keep Lettie entertained. “We brought a small splash pool for her to enjoy on hot days. It’s all about keeping young kids engaged and happy.”

3. Have their own space
The easiest way to get your kids excited about your next adventure is to give them their own space. Start by providing them with a Wolf Pack Pro to store their toys, pens, notepads, games, and other items. Also, give them the sticker sheet that comes with it so they can decorate it. Kids love stickers! Ensure that all their essentials, such as water bottles, books, wet wipes, snacks, and iPads, are within reach before you set off.
Before heading out on a big trip, set up the Front Runner Dometic Roof Top Tent or other tents in the yard to show everyone where they will be sleeping. Ensure they feel comfortable and happy with the setup. A favorite blanket or toy can also help alleviate any worries. A night camping in the garden is a good way to show them what to expect.

4. Give them responsibilities
Kids enjoy feeling like part of the expedition team, so incorporating some of their favorite songs into the road trip playlist is a fantastic idea. Let them assist with simple tasks such as setting up the camping chairs, building a fire, gathering firewood, and pitching the tents.

5. Child-friendly stops
Long, exhausting days on the road can be tough, especially when it’s hot and the scenery remains the same. A refreshing swim in a river or the ocean is sure to lift the kids' spirits. Additionally, a short yet engaging hike or a visit to a family-friendly museum or attraction can also be revitalizing. When planning the trip, you should have noted kid-friendly stops; now it’s time to enjoy them! Make sure that the long driving days are followed by two or three nights at a comfortable and enjoyable campsite!
Traveling with kids is both a blessing and a privilege—an opportunity to create lifelong memories. Having the right gear, planning carefully, and including plenty of kid-friendly stops will help ensure a happy holiday for ever.
