COFFEE ON THE GO
There's something magical about feeling the crisp morning air on your skin, surrounded by nature while savouring a freshly brewed cup of hot coffee. You could be watching the sunrise on top of a mountain, waiting for some wild animals at a watering hole, or plucking up the courage to grab your surfboard before running into the freezing-cold Atlantic Ocean. And what better way to enhance these experiences than with a perfect cup of coffee?
The ability to make a good cup of coffee should be a prerequisite for those who want to venture outdoors, as should choosing the right spot in nature in which to slowly sip away at this life-affirming liquid.
Making decent coffee when on-the-go requires the right gear and the correct processes. Here are a few tips and tricks.

To brew coffee while camping, you'll need a few essential items:
A portable coffee maker or brewing device: Consider options like a French press, pour-over dripper, Moka pot or a lightweight camping coffee pot.
Freshly ground coffee beans: opt for high-quality beans and grind them just before your trip to ensure maximum freshness. Otherwise, if you're on a long journey, you can grind beans daily as needed. This is a popular method among overlanders.
Clean water: Whether sourcing water from a nearby stream or bringing your supply, ensure it's clean and suitable for brewing. Consider storing your water in a Pro Water Tank (20L or 42L) or the Dometic Go Water Hydration Jug 11L and Faucet.
Why not put all your coffee-making gear into a Wolf Pack Pro so that when you do stop for a brew, you have everything in one dry and secure place? You can have your coffee maker, beans, grinder, cups, small gas stove, sugar, sweetener, and anything else you might need to brew the perfect cuppa.
Gas or Fire?
To boil the water using gas or fire, that is the question. Building the perfect campfire is crucial for brewing exceptional coffee. Select dry wood and kindling to ensure a steady and even burn. Keep a close eye on the water to prevent it from boiling or evaporating too quickly.
If you prefer gas, we suggest a portable gas stove like the popular Jetboil, as it can fit into your backpack, and if you’re leaving your car behind as you go for a paddle or hike, you can just take it with and brew a cuppa anywhere.

Now that your water is heated, it's time to brew the perfect cup of coffee. Allow the coffee to steep or drip according to the recommended brewing time for your chosen method. Once brewed, pour the coffee into a sturdy mug or thermos to keep it hot and ready to enjoy.

While simplicity is key when camping, there are ways to elevate your coffee-drinking experience. Experiment with different brewing techniques and coffee varieties to discover your perfect cup. Pack a few extra ingredients like ground hazelnuts and vanilla to brew with the coffee in your Moka pot. Other extra ingredients that could also enhance the experience include cinnamon, cocoa powder, or flavoured syrups.
Clean Up
Responsible camping includes adopting the leave no trace principle, so make sure you clean up and properly dispose of any coffee grounds. Allow used grounds to cool before scattering them wide away from your campsite. Rinse your brewing device with clean water, avoiding using soap to minimize environmental impact.
