HOW TO CREATE A GREAT CAMP KITCHEN

HOW TO CREATE A GREAT CAMP KITCHEN

- 2025-04-19

Whether it’s your first glimpse of summer or your days are getting shorter as you head into Autumn, prime camping season is upon us, and it’s time to take stock of your gear. A good place to start is your kitchen set up, as outdoor cooking is one of camping’s greatest pleasures. Front Runner Dometic has the right camp cooking gear solution if you're lacking in certain areas.

Store it

Camping inevitably involves taking along stuff, and as space restrictions prevent you from literally packing the kitchen sink, it becomes a balancing act between what you need and what can fit into your ride. Front Runner Dometic offers several storage options, but a good starting point would be a couple of Wolf Pack Pro plastic storage boxes. These boxes are great for storing condiments, spices, plates, bowls, cans, and dry rations.

You can improve the carrying capacity of your Wolf Pack Pro by opting for the Hi-Lid option instead of the standard one. Get even more organised when storing your camp kitchen gear in your Wolf Pack Pro using Packing Cubes, Flat Packs, or Foam Dividers. Even though your Wolf Pack Pro is dust- and water-resistant, if you store kitchen gear on your rack, you should put the Wolf Pack Pros in a Transit Bag to keep them clean.

Chop it

Every camp chef needs a surface to prepare or serve food, and Front Runner Dometic certainly has you covered in this department. Our range of Under Rack Tables, Expander Table, Dometic Go Compact Table and Tailgate Drop Down Tables are all great surfaces for this. Throw a few Front Runner Dometic Expander Chairs or Dometic Go Compact Camp Chairs into the mix, and you now also have somewhere to sit and enjoy your meal. This camp kitchen is starting to take shape.

Cook it

Cooking is all about choices. Do you want an open fire, or will you cook with gas? For the former, the Front Runner Dometic Spare Tire Mount Braai/BBQ Grate or compact BBQ Fire Pit (which packs neatly into a Wolf Pack Pro) are both great options. Pack enough gas, matches, kindling, an axe, wood, and charcoal for your outdoor cookout. CADAC offers many light and compact gas cooking options. As soon as you stop your vehicle, you can cook a feast on one of them. However, it’s essential to find out beforehand if open fires or gas BBQs are allowed in your camping area, as they’re prohibited in places prone to bushfires.

Eat it

One of the best and most popular camp kitchen items is the Camp Kitchen Utensil Set. It includes quality knives, forks, and spoons to eat your food and has many other valuable items such as a cutting board, tongs, and a bottle opener. The canvas bag all of this comes in rolls up small, and when open, it can be hung up next to your table for quick access. This should be the first item you buy for your camp kitchen as it covers so many bases such as eating, cutting, chopping, opening up your favourite drink, dishing up utensils, a turner for flipping eggs or burgers, and many more. Put a Camp Kitchen Utility Set plus some plates, cups, a pot, a pan, and mugs in a Wolf Pack Pro, and your camp kitchen is already looking much better than before.

Clean it

The part of camp cooking that no one enjoys is washing the dishes and having greasy BBQs. If you’re travelling somewhere remote, a good start will be ensuring you have enough water to clean up after cooking. If in a desert, use paper plates to save water and take all your rubbish out with you. Do your research and find out if a river or water source is nearby.

The Pro Water Tank is available in 20L and 42L sizes and can be mounted on your roof rack. If this isn’t enough, consider an additional footwell or upright water tank option. A collapsible washing bowl is an obvious space saver, so pick one that fits into your Wolf Pack Pro. Please think about using environmentally friendly washing-up liquid.

Take along the right camp cooking gear, and you’ll be serving up sizzling steaks or a pot of Chili Con Carne in no time.
